Wellington (Telford) Brass Band was officially born in October 2000. Previous incarnations include “Telford Band” and “Dawley Band”. The band has grown over the years helped by sponsorship by Wellington Town Council. The Band plays regularly in and around Telford, appearing at the Remembrance Day Parade in Wellington, the annual Civic Carol Service, and other less formal events such as the switching on of Christmas lights, and carol playing just about anywhere.
The Band has competed annually in the Midland Regional Championships taking prizes each year from 2005 to 2009 and qualifying for the National finals each time. The highlight was first place at the 3rd Section National Finals in 2008. During this period we have been promoted form the fourth, through to the second and next year will be competing in the First Section.
The band has many young players and although we don’t currently have a junior band we encourage youngsters to join with the senior band to gain experience. Many of our young players have gone on to Music College or joined bands in higher sections. We currently have 6 players under the age of 17.
For many years we have been under the Musical Directorship of Steve Curtis to whom we attribute much of our success. Steve has now moved to Manchester and we have a new MD. Mark Phillips is an accomplished horn player and conductor and has a long history of successful banding. He has bought in new ideas and music and the band is continuing to achieve high standards.
