Diving Into the Depths: Wellington (Telford) Brass Band Takes on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Wellington (Telford) Brass Band is proudly preparing for its first contest appearance since promotion to the Second Section, with rehearsals well underway on the official test piece, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Philip Harper.

Inspired by Jules Verne’s classic adventure novel, this dramatic and atmospheric work takes listeners on a journey into the mysterious depths of the ocean. The piece is rich in colour and character, demanding strong ensemble cohesion, musical storytelling and technical control from every section of the band.

Philip Harper, a highly respected composer and former Principal Trumpet of the Royal Northern Sinfonia, has crafted a work that offers both challenge and excitement. From powerful fanfare-like moments to delicate, lyrical passages and tense, rhythmic sections, the music tests balance, stamina and expressive playing — making it an ideal showcase for a newly promoted Second Section band.

Under the direction of Musical Director David Nicholson, rehearsals have focused on shaping the narrative of the music, refining dynamic contrasts and building a confident, unified sound. The band has embraced the challenge with energy and commitment, reflecting the positive momentum following last year’s successful contest season and promotion.

As Wellington (Telford) Brass Band continues its proud tradition, now spanning over 25 years since its formation from Dawley Brass Band, the players are looking forward to taking this thrilling underwater adventure to the contest stage and representing the local community with pride.

We would like to thank our supporters, friends and families for their continued encouragement. Your support plays a vital role in helping the band move forward as we embark on this exciting new chapter in the Second Section.
