This July, Wellington (Telford) Brass Band will present a very special charity concert entitled “Full Circle” — an evening celebrating the remarkable musical life and service of one of the band’s own, Peter Aplin.
Taking place on Saturday 11th July at 7.00pm at Oakengates Salvation Army, the concert will support Mind Telford, helping raise funds and awareness for mental health support within the local community.
For Peter, the title Full Circle could not be more fitting.
His musical journey began over 50 years ago at Oakengates Salvation Army, where he first picked up a cornet at just eight years old. From those early beginnings grew a lifetime devoted to music, service, leadership, and education.
After attending New College Wellington, Peter joined the British Army, serving with the 17th/21st Lancers as a French horn player. His military career took him across the globe, with postings in Germany and throughout the UK, alongside tours to mainland Europe, Cyprus, Canada, the Falklands, and Japan.
Peter also served operationally during the Gulf War in 1990/91 and again in Iraq in 2004, combining military duty with the proud tradition of Army music.
His distinguished career culminated in his final posting as Band Sergeant Major for the Clive Band of the Prince of Wales Division, a role demanding exceptional musical standards, leadership, and dedication.
Following his departure from the Army in 2007, Peter retrained as a teacher and began his educational career in 2010, continuing to inspire future generations both in the classroom and through music. Alongside teaching, he has also served as Bandmaster and Choir Leader at Oakengates Salvation Army, helping shape countless musicians over the years.
Now, as Peter prepares for retirement, Wellington (Telford) Brass Band is proud to honour not only his achievements, but the enormous contribution he has made to music and community life across Telford and beyond.
The concert promises an evening of entertainment, reflection, and celebration, featuring Wellington (Telford) Brass Band alongside special guests, in the very place where Peter’s musical story first began all those years ago.
From a young Salvation Army bandsman to Army musician, Band Sergeant Major, teacher, mentor, and respected member of the local brass band family — Peter Aplin’s journey truly has come full circle.
